FD Calculation Formula

A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t)
  • A: Maturity Amount (Final Value)
  • P: Principal (Initial Deposit)
  • r: Annual Interest Rate (as decimal)
  • n: Compounding Frequency per Year
  • t: Time Period in Years

Effective Annual Rate (EAR): EAR = (1 + r/n)^n - 1. This shows the actual annual return when compounding is considered.

Learn About Fixed Deposits

What is a Fixed Deposit (FD)?

A Fixed Deposit (FD) is a financial instrument offered by banks and financial institutions that provides a higher rate of interest than a regular savings account. In an FD, you deposit a lump sum amount for a fixed tenure, ranging from 7 days to 10 years. The interest rate is fixed at the time of deposit and remains constant throughout the tenure, making it a safe and predictable investment option.

Types of Fixed Deposits

Standard FD

Regular term deposit with fixed interest rate

Tax-Saving FD

5-year lock-in with tax deduction under 80C

Senior Citizen FD

Higher interest rates for seniors (60+)

Cumulative FD

Interest paid at maturity with compounding

Non-Cumulative FD

Regular interest payouts (monthly/quarterly)

Flexi FD

Linked to savings account for liquidity

Tax on Fixed Deposit Interest

Interest earned on Fixed Deposits is fully taxable as per your income tax slab. Banks deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) at 10% if the total interest earned in a financial year exceeds Rs. 40,000 (Rs. 50,000 for senior citizens). If you don't provide your PAN, TDS is deducted at 20%.

Tip: Use our calculator's tax rate feature to see your actual post-tax returns. Consider tax-saving FDs for deductions under Section 80C (up to Rs. 1.5 lakh).
